Personal trainer and licensed Bahamian dietitian Renecia Bain recently told the Freeport News that foods rich in alkaline can be good for stabilizing one’s blood sugar and pressure.
In The Bahamas, the number one health problem is hypertension followed by different forms of cancer and type two diabetes, which is lifestyle related. The dietitian offered advice as to how Bahamians can shop for and eat inexpensive and healthy meals daily.
She told the newspaper that a proper diet can reduce an individual’s risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Likewise, a poor diet based on processed food and sugar can cause high cholesterol and blood pressure, and may lead to heart disease.
One of the keys to choosing a healthy regimen, she said, lies in choosing foods that are basic, not acidic.

“Nutrition is important for so many reasons, particularly for preventing many diseases.”

She said that for breakfast oatmeal with low-fat milk and brown sugar with a piece of fruit on the side is a good choice. She also said that for extra fiber, one can add flax seed.
Bain noted that a major problem for Bahamians is that they do not get enough fiber on a daily basis.
“The recommended amount of fiber for a person per day is 30 grams; the regular person however, only gets 10-15 grams. All forms of diseases stem from the mount of fiber we get” she said.
She confirmed that “The more sugar you get, the more acid blood you get, which means you change the pH of the body. Once the pH of the body changes and gets low, you risk getting hypertension and diabetes.”
To reverse this trend she explained that one must eat alkaline foods such as vegetables to get one’s pH back up. By vegetables, she joked that she was not referring to plantain and cabbage, which, she said are in fact, actually starches.
